Guangzhou to Shenzhen by Train

FirstTimeChinaGuide

Short answer: there is no train shortage on this route. On 2 November 2026 the two cities were linked by 548 scheduled departures, and the only decision that changes your day is which pair of stations you use. Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North is 29 minutes for 74.50 yuan in second class. Guangzhou East to Shenzhen station is 72 minutes for 72 yuan. The 2.50 yuan is noise. The 43 minutes is the real trade, and it turns on which end of Shenzhen you are actually going to.

Same city pair on paper, two different trips in practice: 29 minutes against 72, for 2.50 yuan more.

Every figure below was read from China Railway’s own booking system on 1 November 2026, for travel on 2 November 2026. Departure counts move with the date and with the hour you look, so treat them as that day’s timetable rather than a permanent number. If this is your first Chinese rail ticket, the passport rule and the two booking channels are covered on how to book China train tickets, and the wider network is on the high-speed rail guide.

Two lines, and they are not interchangeable

Shenzhen is served by five stations with trains from Guangzhou, and Guangzhou sends them from six. That is why “the train to Shenzhen” is not one product. The C-series intercity trains run on the older Guangzhou to Shenzhen line and end at Shenzhen station in Luohu, the district that touches the Hong Kong border. The G-series trains run on the high-speed line and mostly end at Shenzhen North, which sits inland in Longhua, well short of the centre.

The split on 2 November 2026 was 272 arrivals at Shenzhen North, 195 at Shenzhen station, 67 at Futian, 10 at Shenzhen East and 4 at Shenzhen Airport. Shenzhen North is the busiest door into the city. Shenzhen station is the one that puts you in Luohu without a metro ride.

All 548 departures, sorted by where you board

This is the table the ticket aggregators do not print, because they sell you a city pair and not a station. Read the first column against the last: the station you leave from decides how early you can start and how late you can come back.

Boarding station Departures First train Last train Train type
Guangzhou South 195 06:18 G3017 23:25 G6025 Mostly G
Guangzhou East 133 06:10 C7001 22:34 C7119 Mostly C
Guangzhou Xintang 80 06:26 C7001 22:50 C7119 Mixed
Guangzhou station 57 06:23 C7005 22:22 C7119 Mostly C
Guangzhou Baiyun 42 06:10 C7005 22:10 C7119 All C
Guangzhou North 37 06:25 D901 21:52 G1117 Mixed

A further 3 departures leave from Panyu and 1 from Huadu, both on the suburban S-series. The first train of the day is C7005 at 06:10 from Guangzhou Baiyun, which calls at Guangzhou station at 06:23 and reaches Shenzhen at 08:05: 1 hour 55 minutes, and the slowest useful option on the list. The fastest train of the day is a different one, G3017 at 06:18 from Guangzhou South, which covers the run in 29 minutes.

The two ends of the day do not match either. The last departure from anywhere in Guangzhou is G6025 at 23:25 from Guangzhou South. The last arrival in Shenzhen is C7119, which leaves Guangzhou Xintang at 22:50 and reaches Shenzhen station at 23:43, which is 18 minutes after the last high-speed departure has already left Guangzhou South.

What the fares actually are

The C-series is a flat fare. It costs 72 yuan in second class and 90 yuan in first whether you board at Baiyun, at Guangzhou station, at Guangzhou East or at Xintang. The G-series is priced by distance, so the same 29-minute train costs more if you join it further out.

Route Second class First class Journey time
Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North (G) 74.50 yuan 99.50 yuan 29 to 50 minutes
Guangzhou East to Shenzhen (C) 72.00 yuan 90.00 yuan 1 hour 2 to 1 hour 22
Guangzhou station to Shenzhen (C) 72.00 yuan 90.00 yuan 1 hour 22
Guangzhou Baiyun to Shenzhen (C) 72.00 yuan 90.00 yuan 1 hour 33 to 1 hour 55
Guangzhou North to Shenzhen North (G) 96.50 yuan 134.50 yuan 1 hour 13

Business class exists on the G trains at 199.50 yuan from Guangzhou South. The C trains carry a premium seat at 129 yuan on some services, which buys nothing in time and is not worth explaining further.

The 2.50 yuan is not the decision, the 43 minutes is

Set the two headline options side by side and the money is a rounding error. Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North is 74.50 yuan and 29 minutes. Guangzhou East to Shenzhen station is 72 yuan and 72 minutes. You are paying 2.50 yuan, about three percent, to save 43 minutes. On the arithmetic alone the G train wins, and it wins on every departure that suits your morning.

The arithmetic is not the whole answer, because the two trains do not deliver you to the same place. Shenzhen station is in Luohu, at the eastern end of the Line 1 spine and a short walk from the Hong Kong border crossing. Shenzhen North is in Longhua, north of Futian, and every trip onward from it starts with a metro ride. If your day is Luohu, Dongmen and the old town, the C train puts you where you are going and the 43 minutes you gave up were spent on the train instead of on a platform. If your day is Futian or Nanshan, both stations need a metro leg, so the 29-minute train is the better start, and the gap widens.

This page does not net those two legs out, because a metro journey time inside Shenzhen was not read from an official source for this page, and a guessed number would make the comparison look more precise than it is. The 43 minutes is rail time against rail time.

The return leg is the one that strands people

Day trips from Guangzhou to Shenzhen fail in the evening, not the morning. On the same date there were 544 departures from Shenzhen back to Guangzhou, and they do not stop at the same time from each station.

Boarding in Shenzhen Last train Arrives Guangzhou Journey time
Shenzhen station (Luohu) 22:28 C7120 Guangzhou East 23:30 1 hour 2
Futian 22:53 G6504 Guangzhou South 23:36 43 minutes
Shenzhen North 23:20 G6208 Guangzhou South 23:50 30 minutes

The gap between the last train from Luohu and the last train from Shenzhen North is 52 minutes, which is longer than the 43 minutes the fast train saved you in the morning. That is the trap: a late dinner in Luohu can hand back more than the whole morning’s gain, and the train you can still catch at 23:20 leaves from a station you are no longer near. Both of those gaps are subtraction, not published figures.

Two things that catch people on this route

The first is the origin station. Guangzhou South and Guangzhou East are at opposite ends of the city, and a ticket names one of them. Buying “Guangzhou to Shenzhen” and then discovering the departure is from the other side of town is the most common way to miss this train. Decide the station before you decide the departure time.

The second is that Shenzhen North and Shenzhen station are not the same place and are not close. A ticket to Shenzhen North that was meant for Luohu is not a small error at 22:00. Both station names appear in the same search results, which is exactly why the table above exists.

What I could not check

Four things would sharpen this page and are left out rather than estimated.

Questions this page gets asked

How much is the train from Guangzhou to Shenzhen?

72 yuan in second class on the C-series intercity trains, from any Guangzhou station. 74.50 yuan on the G-series from Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North, and 96.50 yuan if you board at Guangzhou North. First class is 90 and 99.50 yuan respectively. Read from China Railway on 1 November 2026.

How long does it take?

29 minutes on the fastest Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North train, and 72 minutes on the typical Guangzhou East to Shenzhen station service. The slowest C train on the list takes 1 hour 55 minutes, because it starts at Baiyun and calls at Guangzhou station on the way out.

One, and only from Shenzhen North: G6208 at 23:20, arriving Guangzhou South at 23:50. From Shenzhen station in Luohu the last departure is 22:28, and from Futian it is 22:53. If you are in Luohu after 22:00 you are on the metro to Shenzhen North or you are not going back that night.

Can I do Shenzhen as a day trip from Guangzhou?

Yes, and the rail leg is not what limits it. What limits it is the return, so book the evening train before you leave in the morning. The wider comparison of Guangzhou’s day trips, including which ones need booking and which do not, is on Guangzhou day trips.
